The Unusual Vancouver 2008 Winter
Normally, Vancouver doesn’t get much snow if at all during the winter season. However, December of 2008 was different. We had about 3 weeks of continuous snow, which obviously caused chaos well… everywhere. I can’t even count the number of times I went outside to shovel the never ending amount of snow. Day and night, night and day…
Here are some pictures of that unusual winter weather.

The creepy, very dangerous icicles on the side of a house at the end of the block.

A fresh dump of snow just outside my house. Oh great.

Some nice bare trees. That’s how thick the side street roads were. I can’t even begin to explain how many cars I saw get stuck.

Just a random shot of the pretty trees.

I thought this was kinda cute. Funny how the seagull’s in focus. But look at those scary icicles just waiting to fall.
Snow is, unfortunately, scheduled for tonight and tomorrow, but hopefully, it’ll just be tonight and tomorrow. I’m sure everyone is totally 100% sick of the snowy winter we’ve had. That includes me.

We get that all the time in the GTA, but streets get shovelled and salted quickly, cars still get stuck every now and then though.
And about shovelling the driveway… I got a snowblower
lol

Rajbir,
I’m guessing GTA is Toronto. I’m sure Toronto’s way more used to having lots of snow than Vancouver is. We haven’t had such a huge dump since I was a little kid (so in the 90s).
A snowblower
Awesome!

Oh, it’s getting clean here now, not much snow left. Still snowing over there?
February 10th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Welllll …
it WAS pretty much all clear here.
Until last night. It wasn’t much but there was snow everywhere again. The side roads were like skating rinks this morning but a lot of it’s melted now.
I’m pretty sure everyone’s totally sick of the snow by now.

Lol, some better weather is coming… it was nice yesterday, but the weather forecast for us says snow/rain tomorrow, again.
February 12th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Oh yuck. It’s been pretty dry here for a while. Supposedly 30% chance of showers on Saturday but I hope not.
Vancouver’s supposed to be known for the rainy weather but for some reason I don’t find it all that soggy… just once in a while, but not as much as people claim it to be.
February 12th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Yeah, from what I’ve heard Vancouver is supposed to be really rainy.
Just watched the news here and Toronto has mini-floods all over the place. It’s fine where I’m living though.
February 12th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Yeah. Usually when the news talks about all of this insane crazy snowfall or whatever and floods and stuff in Vancouver, it’s usually the interior they’re talking about.

Concept Cars,
Thanks! Yeah it’s nice when there’s snow when there’s “supposed” to be snow. Not in say, March, which has happened here in Vancouver unfortunately.

Substantial snowfall can disrupt public infrastructure and services, slowing human activity even in regions that are accustomed to such weather. But still, its feel of superb..Concept Cars

Hey Ashley, when all the roads got covered almost with snow… how the transportation works?
March 27th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Well, Concept Cars, transportation is pretty much the same. It’s just much slower.
As far as cars go, the side streets were probably the worst simply because the snow was so thick and cars are only so high. That resulted in people having to push their cars. I’ve had my fair share of being stuck in the snow (yes I drive and I drove in the snow) and also helping other cars get out of it.
Big roads should be plowed so that doesn’t create too much of a situation. It’s usually just the first day of snow that everything’s extra slow.
Transit is a whole other issue. Usually, when the first day of snowfall hits, everything’s total chaos. People are lined up as bus stops for ages with buses that don’t show up for hours and traffic is backed up to death.
Everything still moves along, but just at a snail pace.
